There are 1270 genus-group names available in the Insect Order Thysanoptera by end of 2020. Of these, 850 refer to currently accepted genera, including 65 genera fossils. A further 420 placed synonymy. 474 have been described since 1950. Despite this descriptive activity, supra-generic classification remains poorly structured with relationships largely obscure and 50% monobasic.

We present data to argue that several recent papers on the Thysanoptera of Costa Rica are affected by unsatisfactory technical procedures, including failure to recognize intraspecific structural variation. Fourteen new synonyms are recognized for Costa Rica Thysanoptera, nine generic and five specific.
